I opened my first $1000 term deposit today. Im gonna start putting them away. Now that the tokyo trip is all paid for, I’m gonna try and stash away $10 000 over the course of the rest of the year. This was one of my goals at the start of the year.

I feel so grown up!!!!

Awesome. Having savings really does make you feel more secure.

I have a monthly plan where I chuck in a few hundred bucks a month and over 10 years it really grows.  Of course I can’t touch it before then which is fine for us.  Really this is because there is no interest to be made in Japanese banks for term deposits and I have very little super - so while I can earn decent money here, I have to be really careful to plan for the future for myself.

What are the tax implications for interest made on term deposits these days?

Yay for savings. When Tod & I were first starting out, we read that you should aim to have three months’ salary set aside, just in case you ever lose your job and need some float. So we did that. Of course it doesn’t quite cover our expenses 15 years later and a half a world away but it is comforting nonetheless.
